Sirius SR-H550 Satellite Radio Review at CNET

Sirius SR-H550 Satellite Radio Receiver
CNET has this review written up of the Sirius SR-H550 Satellite Radio Receiver. The editor gives it a 6.9 out of 10 rating, which is good.

The Sirius SR-H550 is made specifically for your home, as it is a table top tuner. There are not too many dedicated home models available, and of the ones that are, the Sirius SR-H550 is one of the most affordable, coming in at around $270.

Dimmensions are 2″ x 14.75″ x 13.63″ (HWD). The easy to read 6-line display in the center of the SR-H550 constantly shows the channel name, number, artist name and song title. This satellite radio holds up to 30 channel presets. Like some other Sirius satellite radios, the SR-H550 also has a Game Alert feature to let sports fans know when their favorite teams are playing. The SR-H550 also has the ability to set parental controls and channel lockouts in case you don’t want your kids to hear certain stations.

The editor was not all that impressed with sound quality, comparing it to a low-bit-rate MP3. Sound quality of the SR-H550 satellite radio was still better than that of FM radio.

A better home satellite radio option might be the Tivoli Model Satellite radio.

Delphi SkyFi Satellite Radio Boombox Review at CNET

Posted under XM Satellite Reviews on Monday 23 January 2006

XM Delphi Skyfi Boombox
CNET has this review of the XM Delphi SkyFi Boombox. The editor gives it a 6.9 out of 10 rating, or in other words, it’s good.

The SkyFi boombox houses the Delphi SkyFi XM satellite radio unit, obviously. The SkyFi boombox comes in at 7″x18.75″x5.75″ (HWD). The only controls found on the boombox are a volume knob and headphone jack. A built-in handle makes the unit easy to carry.

To power the satellite radio boombox, you can use either an AC adapter or six D sized batteries. Reception can be a little tricky. If you’re indoors, you’ll need to find a window with a view of the southern sky to get reception. Another option is uncoiling the 22.5 foot antenna cable that is coiled up inside the boombox unit and placing it by a window with southern sky exposure. If you’re outside, you should be fine.

The biggest problems with the SkyFi boombox XM satellite radio unit are the volume, it doesn’t go high enough for the editor’s tastes. The other problem the editor had was that the SkyFi boombox plays only satellite radio, not CDs or MP3s.

The Delphi SkyFi boombox for XM satellite radio goes for around $100.

Satellite Radio Listener’s Online Shopping Habits

Posted under XM Satellite News, Sirius Satellite News on Sunday 22 January 2006

Interesting story about satellite radio listeners and what their habits are. The study, performed by comScore networks, measures the online behavior of both Sirius satellite radio and XM satellite radio listeners.

The study shows that Sirius radio listeners shop for more higher-end goods and are 40% more likely to visit Jewelry or Luxary good sites than the average online user. Sirius listeners are also 22% more likely to visit online trading sites, such as ebay. Sirius listeners are also 16 percent more like to visit sports sites than the average internet user, this most likely comes from Sirius’ partnership with the NFL.

XM radio listeners are 89% more likely to visit car rental sites and 45% more likely to visit airline sites than the average internet user.

Kind of an odd story, but interesting(to me) nonetheless.

Play XM Radio on Your XBox or Pocket PC

Posted under XM Satellite News on Friday 20 January 2006

XM Satellite Radio
A couple neat little tidbits for all you techies out there. There is a program called XM Satellite Radio for Media Center that allows you to play XM radio through Windows Media Player. And, because it plays on WMP, you can play it on your XBOX. So, no need to buy a home receiver to listen to XM, you can just use your Xbox 360, if you have one.

Another neat deal is a program that lets you listen to XM radio on your Pocket PC. You point your browser to a URL(http://www.xstreamxm.com/mobile), login and then just select the channel you want to play and start listening. XStreamXM also has a program that allows you to play XM on your computer. The difference between using XM’s site and this program is the ability to save 20 favorites and also a nifty box that pops up and lets you know the artist and title of the song that’s playing. Cool.

Bubba The Love Sponge on Sirius Radio

Posted under Sirius Satellite News on Thursday 19 January 2006

I was unaware of this until yesterday, and I thought it might be of some interest to you guys.

Bubba the Love Sponge was the morning show in Tampa, FL a couple years ago and after being knocked off the air due to some FCC troubles has now found a new home on Sirius radio. Howard Stern brought Bubba onboard to do an afternoon radio show from 4-8 PM on Howard 101.

This show was downright hilarious and I imagine it probably still is. From what I hear, everyone from the original cast is back except Ned, who they are trying to get back.
